Child Life Assistant

The Child Life Assistant Certificate (CLA) prepares students for employment in the child life profession by providing experience with the methods, skills, theories, and profession as described by the Association of Child Life Professionals (ACLP). Completion of the certificate offers students a foundation in gaining initial employment at the paraprofessional level, as well as an opportunity to continue toward higher levels of certification.

The goals of the Child Life Assistant Certificate program are to prepare students to:

  1. Understand, apply, and maintain professional and ethical standards of practice including the unique problems and experiences faced by subpopulations,

  2. Learn and apply tools to develop professional relationships with families, providers and community workers,

  3. Identify, obtain, and use the relevant information regarding developmental and psychosocial factors to assist in implementing a plan of care for children and adolescents,

  4. Provide appropriate support for children and families, including the development of advocacy skills and coping techniques, and

  5. Develop and implement educational opportunities and resources that promote learning and mastery.
